I Wonder …
June 1, 2012 | 2 Comments
This week, I’ve been watching students use the Livescribe Pen. It’s very interesting, as some of them choose to just write and draw with the pen, while others add in the oral component as well. Earlier in the year, many students just recorded their thoughts orally, and rarely wrote anything on the paper. Observing the students this week, really made me think.
I wonder what would happen if I started the year by just putting the Livescribe Pen and notebook out at a literacy centre. Would students figure out how to make it work? How would they use it?
I wonder what would happen if I continued the year by periodically modelling different ways to use the Livescribe Pen (e.g., to record reading aloud, to add oral thoughts to written notes, to share thinking during a math problem, etc.), but then just left the tool out and saw what happened. Would students start to use the pen in different ways? How would they use it?
I wonder if a change to my approach would change the way that the students use the Livescribe Pen as a learning tool. What do you think? What have your experiences been? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!

Hi Aviva…I have a LIvescribe that I have only used minimally and want to devote more time to next year with my 2/3 split. I love your idea and may think this one through myself. My group coming up are VERY proficient readers, and apparently quite the little academics, which will be a change from this year. Anyway, it might be an interesting project to try out and see what happens! Keep me posted on your thoughts! In the meantime, I’m going to suggest your idea on our board Livescribe group blog to see what others think…I’ll get back to you!

Thank you so much for your comment! I’d love for you to give this a try, and I’d be interesting in hearing how it goes. Thanks for suggesting it to others as well. Maybe we can all share our experiences with this.
