Using The Livescribe Pen To Record His Reading

Today’s blog post is actually inspired by a wonderful Grade 2 teacher that I work with, Robyn Lucarelli, who started using the Livescribe Pen in her classroom this year. After our student led conferences yesterday, Robyn mentioned to me that her students used the Livescribe Pen during their conferences. Before the conferences, they recorded themselves reading a book at their independent reading level. Then they listened back to their recording, and they set their own reading goal based on what they heard. These goals were shared with the parents during the conferences. Wow! What a wonderful idea!

Last week, I wrote about the Livescribe/Evernote connection, and I started to think that this activity would be great when linked with Evernote. If the students record themselves reading on the Livescribe Pen, and then write their goal on a post-it note, they could take a photograph of their goal, and I could send this photograph to Evernote. I could also send the recording to Evernote too. With the use of tags, both the goal and the recordings could be sorted together. As I do guided reading with the students, I can write my own feedback on how they’re doing in an attempt to reach their goal, and they can also write or record their own feedback. Everything can be uploaded and tagged through Evernote, including the creation of new goals.

When I start writing the next round of report cards, I can use these goals and the notes on them, for specific comments for each child. The report card then becomes a reflection of what I think the children need to work on as well as their own personal goals. I wonder how I can use this same set-up for other subject areas. Thanks Robyn for sharing such a fantastic idea and allowing me to share it with other people here! You really have me thinking.

Have you used the Livescribe Pen in this way before? What were the results? I would love to hear about your experiences too!
