When The iPad Wasn't Enough: Wish I Thought Of The Livescribe Pen Today

Today I wish that I thought of using the Livescribe Pen. It took a big problem for me to really see another tremendous value in this Pen. My Grade 1 and 2 students were both completing different patterning activities this afternoon, and I thought that I would go around and talk to each of them about their patterns. I decided to use the Evernote app on my iPad to write down some anecdotal comments through my discussions with the students. I collected some fantastic data, and I was thrilled with being able to complete such “portable assessment.” This exciting moment ended quickly though. I started talking to the students about tidying up, and I forgot that my iPad was still on. The iPad leaned against me, and all of the notes disappeared. There doesn’t seem to be an “undo” button in Evernote. I was devastated!

While I learned my lesson about turning off the iPad, I also learned my lesson about using the Livescribe Pen in addition to Evernote. Had I used the pen to record my conversations with students, not only would I have an audio recording that I could upload to Evernote, but I would not have risked losing all of my data, which is exactly what I did today. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, I guess. I will not make this mistake again!

Have you ever had a Livescribe Pen “aha moment?” I know that I certainly had one today, and I would love to hear yours too!

I love Evernote. There is another application called Reqall on the ipad/iphone. What it does is records your audio. Afterwards it sends the audio to its servers and produces speech to text (quite decent speech to text).

What you can then do (via the profile and notification settings on the Reqall website) is have Reqall automatically e-mail its speech to text (say your anecdotal note) right into Evernote (go to settings in Evernote and you will see your Evernote e-mail address that you can enter into Reqall as the e-mail address you would like the speech to text to go).

    Best regards,

Thanks for your comment! I’ve never heard of the Reqall app before. I will definitely have to check it out. I appreciate your thoughts!

    Hi Aviva,
Had the same sort of problem with Evernote and am feeling upset about it. Didn’t sync and then didn’t pay attention and overwrote notes I had done. Livescribe would have been much better at that point or some sort of undo as you mentioned.

Thanks for the comment, Isabel! I think that having an undo feature would be great, but having an auditory copy of the notes on the Livescribe would be wonderful too!
