Using The iPad And The Livescribe Pen Together
January 2, 2011 | 2 Comments
Usually I write a blog post after I’ve tried out something new with the Livescribe Pen, but this time around, I’m going to “write” first and “try” second. Over the holiday, I was very excited to get an iPad, and I can’t wait to use it with my students. As I was planning some new literacy and math centres to start during the second week in January, I was trying to think of some ways that I could use the iPad and the Livescribe Pen together. That’s when I came across Rory’s Story Cubes app. With this iPad app, students get to roll picture cubes on the iPad and make up their own stories based on the pictures that they see. This got me thinking: what if the students used the Livescribe Pen to record their oral stories? Then they could upload them onto their blogs and have a real audience for their work. I think that they would love this! The students could even create their own voices for characters and their own, unique plots too. Imagine the possibilities! This could be a reading, oral language, and drama activity all in one. I keep on telling my students that “reading is thinking,” and now the students can see this as they make inferences and use story elements to create their own stories. I can’t wait to see what they do!
Has anyone used the Livescribe Pen to do a similar type of activity before? What were the results? I would love to hear about your experiences too.

Great idea, Aviva! I really like it. It sounds like it would be plenty of fun for the kids and very educational. You could also add an art element to the mix by perhaps having students use dramatics to show their favourite part in their story. It’s also great that Rory’s Story Cubes allows you to save the roll the child has created and this could be something you attach to the blog as well. That way, people listening to the story have the ability to follow along with the images that created the ideas.
Rory’s Story Cubes is an amazing creation; there are so many educational possibilities with this app and the physical game.
Thanks for the comment, Claudia! I love the art addition, and saving the picture to attach to the blog is a fantastic idea. Thanks for the awesome suggestions!
