Learning And Leadership With The Livescribe
September 16, 2010 | 8 Comments
I just got home from Meet the Teacher Night at our school, and tonight gave me the opportunity to see another positive purpose for the Livescribe Pen. The students really wanted to show their parents and siblings how it worked, so we created an activity where the families could be involved in using the Livescribe Pen to help us with a special project. In class today, the students used our Document Camera to take photographs of their paper bag pets that they created after reading The Best Pet. Then they uploaded these photographs to Animoto, and together we made this slideshow:
The students wanted help naming their “best pets,” so we asked family members to record some suggestions using the Livescribe Pen.
Listen to this student explain how to make the Livescribe Pen work too:

For a while now, I’ve heard George Couros, a principal in Alberta, and Shawn Ram, a teacher in Alberta, speak about the fact that anyone can be a leader. Hearing these six year olds explain how to use this tool to their parents and siblings tonight proved to me that this is true.
Just listen to the interaction between this mom and her son:

He’s helping teach her, and together, they’re contributing to the class. I would have never considered the community value and leadership potential with the Livescribe Pen, but both are there. This tool helps give all students the opportunity to be leaders, and given a situation like tonight, allows parents, community members, teachers, and students, the opportunity to work and learn together.
Have you ever used the Livescribe Pen for this purpose? I would love to hear your thoughts on this. We can then learn from each other too!

Aviva great post, you made me blush a little. I haven’t used livescribe personally but will have to give it a try. It is amazing isn’t it, to have the idea or thought that everyone can be a leader, but to then see. As you probably felt, when I see these moments I am just so proud and even more motivated. Once again great post I look forward to seeing and hear more about your students adventures.
Thanks for the comment, Shawn! I’m so glad that you and George have continued to inspire me to change my teaching practices and truly see everyone as a leader. It was an incredible evening! You’re right: seeing this leadership in action is amazing. If you ever do get the chance to try out a Livescribe Pen, you won’t be disappointed! It’s an awesome learning and teaching tool!
Thanks for all of your support!

Aviva,
Thank you!
I love this post! I love the way you incorporated technology and used the Livescribe “teaching moment” for the kids to be leaders. I am sure the looks on their faces as they taught their parents were priceless. As always, you inspire me
Wow! Thank you, Joan! You’re the one that’s always inspiring me. I’m just so glad that this worked out so well for both the students and the parents. I loved seeing our class of leaders in action!

Aviva,
You are a real inspiration to both teachers and students. Your parents are very fortunate to have their children be in an atmosphere of true collaborative learning. All I have left to say is “WOW”
